GBTA convenes European Parliament roundtable examining key EU initiatives to drive sustainable, competitive travel, including the Sustainable Tourism Strategy and \u201cSingle Ticketing Package\u201d and business travel\u2019s role in shaping successful outcomes <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0business travel sector is\u00a0a\u00a0driving force in the shift toward more sustainable mobility\u00a0in Europe, according to insights shared at a high\u2011level European Parliament roundtable in Brussels\u00a0on 8 April. The event\u2014organised\u00a0by GBTA and hosted by\u00a0MEP\u00a0S\u00e9rgio Gon\u00e7alves (S&D, Portugal), a member of the\u00a0Parliament\u2019s\u00a0Committee on Transport & Tourism\u2014brought together influential EU policymakers and\u00a0business travel\u00a0leaders to discuss\u00a0the path\u00a0towards\u00a0a\u00a0more competitive, inclusive,\u00a0greener\u00a0future for travel.\u00a0

Participants included\u00a0MEP Nikolina\u00a0Brnjac\u00a0(EPP, Croatia),\u00a0European Commission\u00a0representative\u00a0Andreea Staicu,\u00a0and\u00a0GBTA CEO Suzanne Neufang,\u00a0as well as\u00a0BCD Travel CEO\u00a0Stephan Baars and\u00a0Parexel\u00a0Executive Director, Travel & Sustainability,\u00a0Ben Park.\u00a0

At the centre of the\u00a0Roundtable\u00a0discussion was the forthcoming\u00a0Sustainable Tourism Strategy<\/a>\u2014the EU\u2019s first comprehensive policy framework for the tourism ecosystem.\u00a0Participants\u00a0examined how business travel can play a pivotal role in helping Europe meet the ambitions set out in the Strategy, through the sharing of initiatives and best practices which\u00a0are\u00a0already prevalent across\u00a0the sector.\u00a0

Another key\u00a0focus\u00a0of discussion was the upcoming Single Digital Booking and Ticketing Regulation,\u00a0also known\u00a0as the\u00a0\u201cSingle Ticketing Package,\u201d\u00a0which aims to simplify cross-border rail travel by allowing passengers to buy a single ticket for journeys involving multiple operators.\u00a0

One\u00a0key\u00a0initiative outlined\u00a0was the\u00a0Desaf\u00edo de aceleraci\u00f3n de la sostenibilidad<\/a>, a GBTA-led initiative\u00a0involving\u00a0more than 400\u00a0global\u00a0companies across a wide range of\u00a0industry\u00a0sectors.\u00a0It\u00a0aims to mobilise\u00a0organisations\u00a0of all sizes and in all geographies, to start, advance, and accelerate the integration of practices that materially reduce their business travel emissions.\u00a0

Addressing the Roundtable, GBTA CEO Suzanne Neufang said: \u201cBusiness travel is catalyst for\u00a0economic\u00a0growth\u00a0and\u00a0innovation, both here in Europe and globally, directly fuelling\u00a0progress within organizations as well as\u00a0demand for ther\u00a0key\u00a0travel\u00a0sectors\u00a0such as\u00a0airlines,\u00a0hotels,\u00a0restaurants\u00a0and more.\u00a0\u00a0

Our sector is also\u00a0at the forefront of\u00a0sustainable mobility, a\u00a0topic\u00a0likely to come into much sharper focus\u00a0with\u00a0the prospect of fuel shortages\u00a0due to the conflict\u00a0in the Middle East.\u00a0Recent insights<\/a>\u00a0from GBTA revealed\u00a0growing uptake amongst businesses for\u00a0Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF),\u00a0a greener alternative to conventional, fossil-based jet fuel.\u00a0

As the voice of\u00a0global\u00a0business travel, GBTA will continue to lead the charge for a greener travel future,\u00a0including at our\u00a0forthcoming\u00a0Sustainability Summit in Vienna on November\u00a02, which will bring together industry leaders,\u00a0experts\u00a0and policy leaders.\u201d\u00a0
