Fuel Shock Poses Threat for Airlines

For the global airline industry, jet fuel and labour remain the largest cost components. Yet, as recent history demonstrates, it is not the absolute level of fuel prices that most endangers profitability, but the pace at which those prices change.

A look at historical trends highlights this distinction. Between 2011 and 2014, jet fuel prices averaged around US$124 per barrel—a high by historical standards. Despite this, the airline industry maintained positive operating margins of roughly 3 percent, thanks to a combination of fare adjustments, efficiency gains, capacity optimisation, and strategic procurement.

Known for her energy, creativity, and collaborative leadership, Shals consistently brings people, ideas, and innovation together to strengthen professional connections and advance the industry.

With more than 24 years of experience in the travel industry, Shals currently serves as Director of Strategic Partnerships at hubli, where she partners with enterprise organizations to modernize how they manage meetings & group accommodations sourcing, and workplace bookings through innovative technology solutions.

A passionate advocate for industry collaboration and professional development, Shals has dedicated over a decade of volunteer leadership to GBTA. She currently serves as Vice Chair of the GBTA Meetings & Events Committee and Founding President of the GBTA South Carolina Chapter, helping to build one of the association’s newest communities. She also contributes to the GBTA Chapter Presidents Council Standards & Guidelines Committee, supporting best practices and knowledge sharing across chapters.

Shals is also recognized for her impactful use of social media to amplify the voice and visibility of organizations she volunteers with, helping highlight member achievements, promote industry dialogue, and strengthen engagement across the professional community.

Her contributions to the industry have been recognized through her selection as a GBTA WINiT Top 50 Rising Female Leader in October 2024, as well as receiving the Emerging Leader Award from the Travel and Meeting Society (TAMS) in April 2025.

Through her chapter leadership, Shals drives programs that deliver meaningful education, networking opportunities, and industry insights for members. Recognized for her dedication, strong work ethic, and commitment to service, she continues to drive meaningful progress in how organizations meet, collaborate, and connect.
