Airline pilots who have safety concerns about flying in the Middle East during the Iran war have told a global aviators' ‌union group they fear blowback ranging from lost pay to being fired if they refuse assignments, its president Ron Hay said.

Pilots from Lebanon to India have voiced "widespread" concerns they could face sanctions if they do not fly in often unpredictable conditions where airspace can close with little notice due to missile or drone strikes, according to the head of the International Federation of Air Line Pilot' Associations.

Business Travel Leaders, EU Policymakers Explore Path to More Sustainable European Travel

Business travel plays a critical role in advancing sustainable mobility across Europe, according to insights shared at a European Parliament roundtable convened by GBTA this week in Brussels.

Hosted by MEP Sérgio Gonçalves (S&D, Portugal), the April 8th event brought together EU policymakers and business travel leaders to examine forthcoming EU initiatives, including the Sustainable Tourism Strategy—the EU’s first comprehensive framework for tourism—and the proposed Single Digital Booking and Ticketing Regulation aimed at simplifying cross‑border rail travel.

Participants included MEP Nikolina Brnjac (EPP, Croatia), European Commission representative Andreea Staicu, GBTA CEO Suzanne Neufang, BCD Travel CEO Stephan Baars, and Parexel Executive Director of Travel & Sustainability Ben Park. Conversations focused on how business travel can support EU climate and competitiveness goals by scaling existing best practices already underway across the sector.

“Business travel is both a catalyst for economic growth and a leader in sustainable mobility,” said Neufang. “As new EU policies take shape, collaboration with our sector will be essential to delivering practical, impactful outcomes.”

The event reflects GBTA’s continued efforts to elevate the business travel industry’s voice in public policy discussions across Europe and globally.
