GBTA Advocacy Addresses Recent Actions by the European Commission
Last month, the EU Commission released its plans to digitalize travel documents. GBTA was pleased to see our concerns were represented in the proposal, including that:
-
The plan is interoperable amongst countries.
-
A traveler can opt in or out.
-
The data is secure and does not require fingerprints.
The proposal requires approval by the EU Parliament and Council. Click here to read GBTA’s statement and the proposal.
Additionally, on October 22, GBTA provided its feedback to the European Commission on the proposed voluntary Flight Emissions Label. This label is aimed at creating a common, standardized and publicly accessible methodology to calculate flight emissions that will allow passengers to make informed choices when comparing flight options. GBTA welcomed the proposal but asked for some improvements:
-
Clarity on whether intermediary platforms will have access to all the data used for the label so that corporate travelers can use it in their emission reporting.
-
Flexibility to allow for the display of different labels to make it easier to compare the environmental impact of different flights at a global scale.
The Commission will take into account stakeholders’ responses and come up with a final regulation establishing the label. Aircraft operators will be able to apply for the FEL from 2025. Read the full response here.
These topics and more will be among GBTA’s discussions when Delphine Millot, Senior Vice President, Sustainability, and Managing Director, GBTA Foundation, and Shane Downey, Vice President, Government Relations, meet with European policymakers in Brussels the week of November 11.
