The management of corporate travel has become highly dependent on the broad range of technology tools that are now available in the marketplace. While there is no one “right” answer for which tools an organization should use (or how they should use them), it is clear that making appropriate use of them is a critical success factor for any organization trying to implement or optimize a managed travel program.
The purpose of this Maturity Model is to enable organizations to evaluate objectively their use of travel-related technology against a set of best-practice standards, and to provide feedback on opportunities to improve their travel management program by making better use of technology. The model does not assume that more technology is better than less; rather it seeks to identify opportunities to make smarter use of technology in the context of a given organization’s needs and goals.
The model assesses technology use in 6 categories:
- Data – the mechanism by which organizations get value from the information gathered by the above platforms (22 questions)
- Meetings – the mechanism by which meeting-related activities and expenses are managed (12 questions)
- Traveler Experience – the mechanism that organizations or travelers use to improve the traveler’s personal travel experience (17 questions)
- Reservation Processing / Approval – the mechanism by which a travelers’ arrangements are approved and fulfilled (27 questions)
- Expense Management – the mechanism by which the traveler pays for and / or is reimbursed for their travel-related expenses (16 questions)
- Shopping / Booking – the mechanism by which the traveler views their travel options and purchases travel arrangements from those options (43 questions)
The model can be used to evaluate any or all of the above areas, and individuals can revisit their inputs to the model over time to see the impact of program changes. The model will provide recommendations based on the input given by the respondent. These recommendations will guide individuals on the areas that need improvement and can help them achieve the next level in the Travel Technology Maturity Index.
As part of this assessment, we ask you to provide certain demographic information about your company. The time needed to complete all of the questions will vary from person to person. However, we estimate most people will be able to complete all questions within 45 to 60 minutes. Rest assured this information is completely confidential and will only be used in aggregate for benchmarking purposes.

Prompts based on total average maturity level after self-assessment
The model is designed to assess an organization’s “maturity” on the following scale:
Level 1 – Passive –the organization has little or no technology deployed.
Level 2 – Engaged – the organization is developing a go-forward plan to deploy travel-related technology.
Level 3 – Proactive – the organization has a plan that is being executed and appropriate technology is being leveraged to some degree.
Level 4 – Managed – the organization has deployed appropriate technology and is being managed effectively with full executive support.
Level 5 – Strategic – the organization is at the highest level of travel technology maturity, including complete and appropriate usage, effective data management and continuous improvement based on ongoing feedback
