Business Travel Powers Economic Growth Across the World’s Leading Business Destinations

Business travel generated an estimated $283 billion in total economic activity across 25 of the world’s leading business destinations, according to new research from GBTA and Rockport Analytics. 

Based on 2024 data, the study found that $178 billion in business traveler spending suportado 1.4 million jobs, contributed $93 billion to local GDP, and generated nearly $55 billion in tax revenue across the cities studied.

  • Every $1 of business travel spending generated approximately $1.59 in total local business activity. 
  • Every $1 billion in business travel spending supported approximately 7,800 jobs. 
  • New York, Tokyo and London led the 25 cities in total business travel spending. 
  • Seven cities each exceeded $10 billion in business travel spending and together represented 61% of the total across the cities studied. 
  • In four cities, business travel accounted for more than 1% of total city GDP.  

The study examines managed and unmanaged business travel across meetings and conventions, sales and customer engagement, training, internal meetings, incentives and operations.
